Shirley Bessette, 93, passed away peacefully with family at her side on January 4, 2022. She was the wife of the late Rudolph L.A. “Al” Bessette.
Shirley was born in Dighton and was the daughter of the late Gilbert Stetson and Harriet (Chase) Stetson.
Mrs. Bessette was employed as a cook at Cassidy High School for many years until her retirement and also worked as a pharmacy clerk at Rekards’ Pharmacy. Shirley loved baseball and was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan who seldom missed watching a game. Shirley was well known throughout her community as a woman whose door was always open to children. “Mrs. B”, as she was affectionately known, was happiest when she was surrounded by young faces. She enjoyed loading up her station wagon and bringing kids to the drive-in and taking trips to Horseneck Beach. In addition, she and her husband were devout Catholics, and her faith was an extremely important part of her life. Mrs. Bessette was a longtime communicant of St. Andrews Church in Taunton. She will be fondly remembered as a fun woman with a sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor.
She is survived by her children, Suzanne Bessette of Penobscot, ME, Robert Bessette and his wife June of Raynham, Richard Bessette and his wife Debbie of Carson City, NV and Ronald Bessette and his wife Malinda of Kemah, TX; eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Robert Stetson and Eleanor Peckham and mother-in-law of the late Elliot Lengel.
