Russell W. Fontaine, 95, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2021. He was the loving husband of Lucille L. (Canuel) Fontaine, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. Mr. Fontaine was born in Fall River, son of the late Ernest and Lillian (Levitre) Fontaine.
Russell served his country honorably in the US Navy during World War II and went on to work as a slash attender in the Fall River Mills and reserve police officer with Town of Westport. Russell retired from the Department of Corrections after a long career at MCI Norfolk. He was a longtime communicant of St. Louis de France Church in Swansea. A member of the Knights of Columbus he served on the former St. Isidore Council and the Prevost Council in Fall River. He was a member of the American Legion.
Russell was a family man and dedicated to his faith. When not at work he could be found working around the house and tending to his garden. Russell also enjoyed traveling with his wife in their motor home during retirement and spending time in Florida. He will be remembered as an honest and kind man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to others.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Richard A. Fontaine and his wife Francyne of Barrington, RI, Susan C. Jameson and her husband Nicholas of Plaistow, NH; siblings, Joseph Fontaine and Joan Marques both of Westport; grandchildren, Colin Jameson and his wife Lisa, Erin Jameson, James Etheridge and his wife Amanda, Erica O’Malley and her husband Patrick, Mark Etheridge and his wife Karina; great-grandchildren MadisonJameson, James Etheridge, Tyler Etheridge, Owen O’Malley, Shea O’Malley, Maya Etheridge, Ava Etheridge, FinnO’Malley and Brooke Etheridge; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Rhea Proulx.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, March 29, 2021 from 8:30-9:30am in the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffington St., Somerset, MA followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Louis de France Church, 56 Buffington St., Swansea, MA.
Entombment with military honors will follow at the Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River MA.
