Ronald F. O’Berry, Sr.

Ronald F. O’Berry Sr, 87, passed peacefully at his son's home surrounded by his family on Monday, May 18th, 2020.

Born in Pontiac, Michigan, he was the son of the late Lloyd Orville, and Irene Marie (Perry) O’Berry.

Ron grew up in Michigan with a large loving family. His passion was professional boxing and he competed in the Michigan Welterweight Division. Ronald was a proud member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and was always willing to share knowledge he had learned along the way. He had lived in New Bedford for the last 58 years and was a graduate of Bristol Community College.  Ron was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the On-I-Set Wigwam Spiritualist Camp. He was a former President of the NBHS Gridiron Club, and the Scout Master of Troop 21 out of Westlawn projects.

He was formerly employed by the New Bedford Housing Authority, as well as a house painter for various local contractors.

He is survived by his children, Rhonda A. Costa and her husband Jack of Dartmouth, MA, Ronald F. O’Berry, Jr. and his wife Janis of Fairhaven MA, Richard J. O’Berry and his wife Bonnie of New Bedford MA, Rebecca J. Blumenstein and her husband Bruce of Stuart FL, Russell J O’Berry of Saco, ME, Renee M. Parkin and her husband Michael of New Bedford, MA. His brother David O’Berry and his wife Chrissy;  four sisters, Lois Meyers and her husband Jim, Carlene Rodrigues, Carol Monjeau, and Deborah Deaton all of Michigan; as well as 14 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren, and 257 nieces and nephews.

Ron was predeceased by his son Robb A. O’Berry, his sisters Norma and Barbara O’Berry, Connie Fletcher, and June Jordan. His brothers, Lloyd O’Berry Jr, Owen O’Berry, Mike O’Berry, Pat O’Berry, and Dennis O’Berry.

Services will be private.

Arrangements are by the Donaghy-Hathaway Funeral Home, 465 County St., New Bedford.
