TAUNTON—Rita Gallego, 84, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2021 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton. She was the wife of the late James A. Gallego.
Rita was born in Somerville, MA and was the daughter of the late Edwin Marcoux and Bertha (Langevin) Marcoux.
Rita was a graduate of Attleboro High school Class of 1955 and was employed as a Taunton Schools Bus Driver and Paul A. Dever van driver for many years. Rita was also a longtime communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Church (formerly St. Jacques) and Holy Rosary Church in Taunton. She was a wonderful cook and baker who enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. Rita was also an avid traveler, having traveled the world with her late husband James. She particularly enjoyed the time she spent in Mexico and the Azores, and visiting her extended family in Vermont and Charleston, SC. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends and family and the occasional Bingo game with her sister. Rita would do anything for her family and cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her beloved cat (Kitty). She will be fondly remembered by her family and many life-long friends as a strong, loving and independent woman, known affectionately by all as “Mem”.
She is survived by her children, Maria Prado and her husband David of Taunton, and Joseph Gallego and his wife Jennifer of Dighton; siblings, Maurice Marcoux of N. Attleboro and Gloria Wambolt of Taunton; grandchildren, Michael Prado, Jack and Lucy Gallego; great-grandchildren, Kinley and Joseph, several nieces and nephews, and Kristen Drevna.
She was the mother of the late Victoria Gallego, sister of the late Edwin Marcoux and grandmother of the late Devon Prado,
Calling hours will be held on Monday, September 6, 2021 from 4-7pm in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave., Taunton. Mask wearing and social distancing are suggested while in the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at 10am in St. Jude the Apostle Church, 249 Whittenton St., Taunton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend DIRECTLY TO THE CHURCH.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Taunton.
