Philip J. Gladue, Jr., passed away peacefully on January 17, 2021 at the age of 90. He was the loving husband of Virginia (Chorlton) Gladue, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.
Phil was born in the Ocean Grove neighborhood of Swansea and was the son of the late Philip J. Gladue and Flora (Cote) Gladue. He attended Joseph Case High School and was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island.
Phil lived most of his adult life with his family in Somerset. He held a long and distinguished career at the former Citizens Savings Bank (now BayCoast Bank) retiring as Senior Vice President and was a longtime communicant of St. Louis de France Church in Swansea. As a loan officer at the bank, he cherished the opportunity to assist many with the purchase of their first home or start a new business. During his career, Phil was a member of the United Way, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Quequechan Club in Fall River.
In his younger years, he could be found on the Narragansett Bay. An avid mariner, Phil raced sailboats, continued his father’s charter boat business at Rocky Point Park and offered boat charters in Newport harbor to watch the America’s Cup. Ultimately, Phil will be remembered as a true gentleman who put his family above all else in his life.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Jane Plager and her husband Michael of Greenfield, MA, Martha Gladue and her wife Peggy Valenti of Boston and Susan Powell and her husband Brian of Portsmouth, RI; sister, Lucille Hedge and her husband Henry of Swansea; grandchildren, Matthew and Benjamin Plager and Caroline and Amanda Powell; niece, Donna Banks; nephew, Ronald Hedge and countless lifelong friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of Country Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice Services of MA for the loving care and comfort they gave him in the last years of his life.
