We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Hathaway Community Home for Funerals
Muriel M. (Ouellette) Patenaude, 89, of Somerset, MA passed away June 30, 2022 at Charlton Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Bertrand A. Patenaude Jr. to whom she had been married nearly 70 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother affectionately known to her family as “Mem”.
Born in Fall River, MA on August 6, 1932 to the late Albert J. Ouellette and the late Lauretta (Belanger) Ouellette, Muriel was raised in the south end of the city and was a member of the former Blessed Sacrament Youth Choir. A 1947 graduate of Henry Lord School, Muriel went on to attend Durfee High School. She met her husband and high school sweetheart, Bert, at the beginning of Sophomore year in home room. It was the beginning of their love story, but Muriel, like so many others in her generation, had to leave school to help support her family. At the age of 16 she worked full-time in the garment industry at the former Har-Lee Manufacturing Company and was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. She also worked part-time as an assistant ballroom dance instructor for a local studio. Muriel was a talented dancer. She and Bert would frequent the local dance halls and were well known for their jitterbug dancing! They were married in Blessed Sacrament Church on September 6, 1952 and moved to Texas where Bert was stationed during the Korean War. Muriel was employed at the local canteen there. Following Bert’s honorable discharge, they returned home to start their family. Muriel worked on 2nd shift in the garment industry until they moved to Somerset where she devoted all of her time to raising their 3 children. She later enrolled in night classes, became a licensed real estate broker, and worked with her husband for many years in the insurance agency that he founded, the former Bertrand A. Patenaude Jr. Insurance & Real Estate, Inc., until her retirement in 2006.
Muriel was a communicant of St. Louis de France Church in Swansea where she maintained an active participation through much of her life. She was a member and past president of the Ladies of St. Anne Sodality of the church, a eucharistic minister, lector, and a member of the church choir. A recipient of the Fall River Diocese Marian Medal, Muriel was a member and past president of the District Council of Catholic Women, a member and past secretary of the New England Council of Catholic Women, and a member of the National Council of Catholic Women.
A large part of Muriel’s life was her involvement with the Lions Club, and she was in her 42nd year of service with the organization. She was a longtime member of the Fall River Carousel Lions Club, and previously a member of the Fall River Evening Lioness Club. An active and committed Lion, Muriel served in all the official positions of the club and served as president numerous times. She was passionate about helping others, and went above and beyond to give outstanding service to her club and community. Muriel received numerous honors and distinguished awards throughout her many years of service and was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest recognition from Lions Clubs International Foundation. Muriel was a shining example of true Lionism.
Above all else, Muriel’s greatest role in life was that of a devoted wife and mother, and a much-adored grandmother and great-grandmother. She cherished every moment with her family and especially with her loving husband, Bert. She made every holiday special and loved to shower her family with gifts. Proud of her French-Canadian heritage, Muriel enjoyed preparing traditional family recipes that have been handed down for generations, including French meat stuffing and French “creton” at Christmas. She was blessed with many lasting friendships over the years and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her loving husband, Muriel leaves her children, Michael Patenaude and his wife Lisa of South Glastonbury, CT, Dr. Bertrand Patenaude and his wife Christina of Menlo Park, CA, Denise Roberge and her husband Roger of Somerset, MA; her grandchildren, James Roberge (wife Laura), Christopher Roberge (wife Leslie), Jennifer Ashley (husband David), Jessica Kitchen (husband Harrison), Meredith and Mary Patenaude; her great-grandchildren, Jack, Grace, Charlotte, Emma, Claire, Henry, and a new great-grandbaby due in November; her sister, Claudette Nogueira; nieces, nephews, and many close friends.
The family wishes to thank the ER doctor and care team at Charlton Memorial Hospital for the kindness, compassion, and outstanding care they provided to our mom in her final hours.
All arrangements are private at the request of the family and have been entrusted to the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Muriel’s memory to the Fall River Carousel Lions, PO Box 1323, Fall River, MA 02722.
