Mildred Hammond Bauer, 96, of Kingston, NH, formerly of Attleboro, MA, passed away at her home at All American Assisted Living on March 13, 2023. Born in Portland, ME, she was the daughter of the Rev. J. Albert Hammond and Gertrude Grace (Mosier) Hammond.
Mildred graduated from Samuel D. Hanson High School, Buxton, Maine, valedictorian, class of 1944. In 1948 she graduated from Colby College, summa cum laude, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She obtained her master’s degree from Boston University School of Social Work in 1955. She was married to the late Rev. Everett S. Bauer for 53 years.
Millie lifted up the lives of countless people in her career as a psychiatric social worker, working at the Boston City Missionary Society; the Episcopal Children’s Friend and Service in Boston; Travelers Aid in Providence, RI; Bradley Hospital in East Providence; and Family Service Inc. until her retirement at age 65.
Millie was a passionate advocate for children, peace, and the environment. She served as a group facilitator for Parents Helping Parents, as a member of Baptist Peacemakers of RI, as a founding member of a Serious Effort for Nuclear Sanity and Education (SENSE), and as a helper to refugees from Vietnam entering the US. She was an active member of Lime Rock Baptist Church, Lincoln, RI, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School. When Everett retired as pastor there, they moved to the Bauer homestead in Attleboro, where they found a true home at the First Baptist Church. There Millie served as a Deacon, organized women’s gatherings, and was treasurer of the Mission Circle. Also she was a member and secretary of the Attleboro Land Trust.
Millie enjoyed many hobbies and crafts, including caning chairs, braiding rugs, listening to classical music, and spending time with cherished friends and family. She had a special place in her heart for her cats, and one of her favorite spots to be was at her father’s cabin on Great East Lake in Acton, Maine.
Mildred is survived by her son Paul C. Bauer and wife Sharon of Bedford, MA and her daughter Andrea L. Ratner and husband Keith of Amesbury, MA, and four grandchildren, Louisa, Hayden, Eli, and Evi. In addition she is survived by her beloved partner of 11 years, Ronald Brown, Kingston, NH.
A funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church, 118 Main Street, Attleboro, MA on Saturday, March 18 at 10am, followed by a time of collation in the church hall and interment at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mildred’s memory may be made to Lime Rock Baptist Church, Lincoln, RI or First Baptist Church, Attleboro, MA.
