Obituary

Joseph E. Faria, Jr., 96 of Fairhaven passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Doris (Taylor) Faria, having shared 56 years of marriage at the time of her death in 2001.

Born and raised in New Bedford, son of the late Joseph E. and Mary (Mendoza) Faria, he and Doris settled in Fairhaven more than 50 years ago and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Fairhaven. During World War II, Joe served in the Merchant Marines in the South Pacific. He later retired as a supervisor at Alden Corrugated in New Bedford.

Joe was one of five founding members of the Acushnet River Safe Boating Club, now known as the Fairhaven Coast Guard Auxiliary. One of his proudest moments was working with the US Coast Guard and Homeland Security. Happiest while traveling, he and Doris truly enjoyed cruising the Caribbean. An avid fisherman, with extensive knowledge of Buzzards Bay, he spent most of his leisure time saltwater fishing, with the love of his life.

He was brother of the late Frank Faria, Olga Gularte, and Gilbert Faria. Survivors include sister-in-law, Jean Faria of Winsor Locks, CT. and her daughter Diane Kycia and husband Michael of Manchester, CT, brother-in-law, Frank Gularte of Lecanto, FL., great-nephew, David Kycia, wife Nicole and their children, Michael, Autumn, Robert and Willow. He also leaves behind dear friends, Dave and Sandy Park of Fairhaven, Kris Park and son Alex, Kim Gardner, husband Peter and their daughter, Viola Elizabeth, who all lovingly referred to him as the Captain.
