John P. Sorensen, Jr., 92, of New Bedford passed away Sunday, June 21, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of Muriel (Hathaway) Sorensen and the late Joan (Rovario) Sorensen.
Born and raised in New Bedford, son of the late John P. and Esther (Hugo) Sorensen, he lived in Rochester prior to returning to New Bedford in 1984. John graduated from New Bedford High School and served in the Coast Guard from 1946-1949. He then worked for the Standard Times for 45 years as a printer until his retirement in 1992.
John was a member of the former Elim Baptist Church in New Bedford and later the Long Plain Baptist Church. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and square dancing with the Senior Steppers.
He is survived by his wife Muriel; two sons, Eric P. Sorensen and his wife Norma of Acushnet and Stephen M. Sorensen and his wife Paula of Fairhaven; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren: two step sons, William M. Wolfgang and his wife Kelli and Michael J. Wolfgang and his companion Petra all of Fairhaven; 8 step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Sorensen was the father of the late Christopher J. Sorensen and brother of the late Barbara Conlon and Dorothy Pearson.
In accordance with his wishes he will be cremated and a graveside service will be held Friday, July 10, 2020 at 10 am in the Center Cemetery, 30 Dexter Ln., Rochester. Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
