Obituary

Joan M. Souza, 58, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday September 21, 2021 after a brief illness and hospitalization.

Born in Fall River to Alice (Gaboury) Jacintho, Joan grew up under the watchful care of her sister Anne, and brothers David and Jim. She was an active youth member of her church choir and even taught herself how to play the guitar. She could often be found playing her guitar and singing to herself. She had a beautiful voice, though she was sometimes too shy to share it with the world.

In her adult life Joan worked hard to finish her degree with the Brockton School of Nursing through Fisher College and become a surgical RN at St. Anne’s hospital in Fall River. While finishing school, she would study with her daughter, Audrey, making up memorization games and mnemonics to help. Caring for others came naturally to Joan, as anyone who knew her would agree. She had a big heart and would give love easily.

Even into adulthood Joan kept the same joyful spirit she had in her youth. Joan loved to travel, taking many road trips along the east coast with her cousin Michelle and sister Anne.  She also loved to cook and liked trying new recipes she found online or while watching the Food Network.

She loved watching movies and singing along to musicals with Audrey and even going so far as to travel around the area to see Phantom of the Opera three or four times within the same year together with Anne and Audrey. A feat she was very proud of! She was always so excited for the Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. She decorated enthusiastically, just like her mother Alice would, and spent countless hours creating the perfect Halloween costumes for Audrey.

For the last sixteen years, Joan lived in the warm weather climate of Florida. She loved the sun and the warmth and would joke with her family in New England about how she hated that “four letter word” (snow). While she missed her family, she certainly did not miss the frozen temperatures of a Massachusetts winter.

Joan is survived by her daughter Audrey Maigret and husband Andrew of East Providence, her sister Anne Young of New Mexico, her brother David Rosa of Florida, and her brother James Jacintho and wife Susan of New Mexico. Additionally Joan is survived by her cousin Michelle Costa and husband Robert of Westport, MA, as well as her niece Sara Jacintho-Schavz and her nephew Matthew Jacintho.

Joan loved with all of her heart, as those who were lucky enough to share in her love know. The world is just a little bit dimmer without her in it.
