James R. “Harpo” Marx, 68, of New Bedford passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at home after a long illness.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Roger and Wilma L. (Craig) Marx, he grew up in Fairhaven where he graduated from Fairhaven High School and settled in New Bedford 40 years ago. Jim served in the USMC during the Vietnam War and later worked as a mechanic for the Union Street Bus Company for many years.
He enjoyed riding his Harley and was a member of the IBF for many years. Jim enjoyed the outdoors, spending time hunting, camping and he was a regular in the Mattapoisett River, Memorial Day boat race.
He is survived by his brother, Craig Marx and his wife Elaine of Fairhaven; his sister, Claire S. Walecka and her husband Norris of Fairhaven; several nephews and grandnieces and a nephew; and a host of loyal friends, especially Mark Theodore and Josh Medeiros.
In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and memorial visitation will be held Thursday from 5-8pm in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven. A graveside service with military honors will be held Friday, June 18, 2021 at 10AM in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.
