Obituary

James Michael O’Leary, 82, died May 12, 2020 at home. Born September 3, 1937, to the late Michael J. and Edna M. (Metcalf) O’Leary of Fairhaven, MA.

After graduating from Fairhaven High School in 1956, he served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed by American Press until his retirement. James was an active member of the YMCA and a three time finisher in the New Bedford Half Marathon. He also enjoyed participating in and volunteering for the annual Fairhaven Father’s Day Road Race. 

James is survived by his former wife Jeanne (Deschamps) O’Leary and their children, son John (Nancy Messina) of Tennessee, daughters Judith (Kevin Jones) of Pennsylvania, Christine (Raymond Messina) of Virginia, and Cathleen (Michael Cabral) of Pennsylvania; brother Daniel and sisters Margaret Clark and Martha Doherty; his grandchildren: Erin, Christopher and Kelsey O’Leary, Benjamin, Andrew, Joshua and Matthew Jones, Michael and Rachel Messina, and Jasmine Cabral. James is also survived by his loving companion Evelyn Crawford of New Bedford, her two children, grandson, and many loving relatives and friends. 

James was preceded in death by his infant son Michael, brothers John and Raymond, and sister Mary Miller. 

A memorial service will be held in his honor at a later date.
