Gertrude (McCarthy) Bissonnette, 92, of Fairhaven passed away Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Alden Court Nursing and Rehab Center in Fairhaven after a period of declining health.
Gert was born on July 22, 1928 in New Bedford, daughter of the late George H. McCarthy, Sr. and Gertrude (Bradshaw) McCarthy, one of their eight children. She was the last surviving child, preceded in death by her brothers, George H. McCarthy, Jr., John J. McCarthy and Stephen McCarthy along with her four sisters; Kathleen Reed, Lillian Couto, Mary Rodriques and Eileen St. Aubin.
Gertrude married the love of her life, the late Lyles R. Bissonnette and they moved to Fairhaven and promptly started a family. They had three children, all now deceased; Brenda Bissonnette, Raymond Bissonnette and Cynthia Brodeur. Gert was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven where she made many lifelong friendships and volunteered in a variety of capacities throughout her life. She enjoyed everyday, in spite of the many hardships and losses she faced, and was devoutly proud of and grateful for, her family.
She loved dancing and went twice a week for as long as she was physically able. She met a companion, Manuel Camacho, later in life and they continued to dance, sing and enjoy each other’s company whenever possible until his passing. She enjoyed spending as much time with her loved ones as possible and hosted many cookouts, clam boils, pig roasts and open houses for New Years and St. Patrick’s Day. She always spoke fondly of large family gatherings and affectionately would muse, that the time was spent singing and laughing. She truly loved life.
She is survived by her granddaughters, Melissa L. Brodeur Lynch and her husband Timothy Lynch of Rochester and Kathryn Brodeur Henderson and her husband Donald J. Henderson and their two children, Kenley and William Henderson also of Rochester; along with a truly cherished host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her calling hours Wednesday from 4-6pm in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
