Peaceful 09

Evangelos Tassopoulos

July 8, 2020

Evangelos (Angelo, “Papou”) Tassopoulos, 88, of Wareham passed away peacefully July 8th at home, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on March 24, 1932 to Apostolos and Vasiliki (Zakada) in Athens, Greece.

He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Catherine, after originally meeting her on Valentine’s Day in Athens, Greece.  He had two children, Paul (Vilma) and Bessie (Roger Cabanas).  Angelo moved his family to Canada in 1963 with $600 in his pocket to work as a carpenter and provide a better life for his children.  He then moved to the United States in 1969 to work with the goal of later having his family join him.  In 1971 he was able to move his family to the US with him to accomplish the dream he had held and worked hard towards since he was 17 years old.

After many long years working as a carpenter, Angelo purchased The Phoenix Restaurant in Fairhaven 1983.  He completed the additions and renovations to The Phoenix with his own hands.  He and his wife Catherine ran it until retiring in 1994.  They were then able to enjoy traveling back to Greece, to their second home in Evia and being surrounded by their olive trees.

Always a family man, he leaves behind 7 much loved grandchildren, Chris Panagiotopoulos, Catherine (Panagiotopoulos) Varitek, Angelo Panagiotopoulos, Catherine Tassopoulos, Debbie (Panagiotopoulos) Gay, Olivia (Tassopoulos) Riley, and Angelo Tassopoulos.  He also leaves behind 10 beloved great grandchildren.

He will be remembered as a stoic, hard-working and loving man of few words.  Arrangements were private, under the direction of the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Angelo’s memory to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (
