Eugenia “Jan” Lopes, 89, of Hamden, CT passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Hamden Health Care Center with family by her side. Eugenia was born June 26, 1931 in New Bedford, MA. to Joseph Marcelino and Aurora (Carmo-Marcelino) Pereira.
She is survived by her son Carl (Kathryn) Lopes of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts and daughter Leslie (Todd) Foster of Stratford, Connecticut, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a sister, Ethel Griffith, and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Anthony “Jep” Lopes.
Jan held a special place in the hearts of many. Her selfless love and wonderful sense of humor left indelible impressions upon everyone she met. Her family held the center position of her heart, but her love extended far beyond.
Jan’s loving touch produced marvelous outcomes, whether it was in her own flower garden, doing caning work, behind a sewing machine or with knitting needles and crochet hooks. Everything she produced was a product of love and done with excellence.
She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a long-standing member of the First Church of the Nazarene in New Bedford, MA. prior to moving to Connecticut.
Jan retired as an Administrative Assistant from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, MA. Among the many volunteer positions she formerly held were: Vice President of the New Bedford YWCA board of directors , President of the Wall Street Winners Investment Club, President of the T.A. Green School PTO in New Bedford, MA, and volunteer at Our Lady’s Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fairhaven, MA.
In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated. A memorial service will be held Monday, October 26th at 11:00am at the First Church of the Nazarene 764 Hathaway Road in New Bedford, MA. A private interment for immediate family will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. as she is laid to rest beside her beloved husband. Local arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
