Elsie M (Benevides) Bradbury, 99, passed away in the comfort of her home on June 1, 2021. She was married for sixty-eight years to the love of her life, the late James E. Bradbury and they had a daughter, Gayle S. Bradbury. Elsie was born in Somerset and lived there all her life. She was the daughter of the late Manuel F. Benevides and the late Mary Tavares Benevides.
The Christmas season was Elsie’s favorite time of the year. She and James married December 24, 1942 in Scott Field, Illinois just before he shipped out. It was the wedding that almost wasn’t. Her luggage didn’t arrive with her. She refused to get married until her wedding dress arrived. It did. Then their best man fell the day of the wedding, leaving James to stand in the middle of his barracks and yell out, “Would anyone like to be my best man?” With a new best man, the rest of the day was as smooth as her silk dress.
She had a more than thirty year career with Stanley Home Products. She began as a dealer doing In-home product demonstrations and moved up to a managerial position. Through that time she made lasting friendships with many of her hostesses. As a thank you for their continuing support , Elsie hosted an annual Christmas party at White’s, complete with Santa and prizes.
Elsie was a member of the Somerset Village Seniors’ Group and served for many years as president. She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Somerset and an active member of their Woman’s Guild. She was a long time member of the Somerset Historical Society of which her husband James was curator. Her favorite activity was spending time with her two best friends, Ann Wilson and Sally Borges.
Elsie is survived by her daughter Gayle as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband James as well as her siblings, Manuel, Joseph and John Benevides, Mary Garcia, Louise Braga, Anna Sousa and Dorothy Dupont.
Gayle would like to thank the Southcoast Visiting Nurses’ Association, their Hospice services and all those who provided the kind and compassionate care that allowed her to remain at home.
