Elizabeth “Betty” (Gomes) O’Malley, 93, formerly of New Bedford passed away peacefully Sunday, October 18, 2020 at the Sippican Healthcare Center in Marion. She was the wife of the late Edward O’Malley.
Born on Nantucket, daughter of the late John and Mary (Silvia) Gomes, she settled in New Bedford when she was 14 years old. Betty graduated from New Bedford High School and had been an Activities Aide at the Sacred Heart Home until her retirement in 1993.
Betty was a very sociable person who loved spending time with friends and especially her family, whom she loved deeply. She was always smiling and had a rare optimistic outlook on life. She had a beautiful kind soul who could brighten your day with just a smile.
Survivors include her two daughters, Karen Whitehead of Dartmouth and Kerrie Bowden and her husband Donald of New Bedford; her five grandchildren, Christine Williams, David Luckraft, Michelle Sousa, Jessica Bowden and Christopher Bowden; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. O’Malley was the sister of the late Francis, Walter and John Gomes.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sippican for the wonderful care given to Betty during her stay with them.
Calling hours are Monday, October 26, 2020 from 4-7pm in the Donaghy-Hathaway Funeral Home, 465 County St., New Bedford. Interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery will be private.
