NORTH DIGHTON -- Dorothy T. (Dot) Torres, 92, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022, surrounded by loving family. She was the devoted wife of the late Francis J. (Frank) Torres for more than 68 years. Born in North Dighton in 1929, Dot was the daughter of the late Joseph W. (Bill) and Lena M. Bleau. She was sister to Irene E., who died in childhood, and the late Robert D. Bleau.
Dorothy was a 1947 graduate of Dighton High School and was the class valedictorian. She attended Bridgewater Teachers College and Brockton Business College. In 1949, Dot married her high school sweetheart Francis (Sonny) Torres, and together they raised a family of four children.
A lifelong resident of Dighton, Dot worked at Dighton Elementary School for 40 years, serving as an instructional aide in the Reading and Special Education departments. Passionate about her work, and popular with both students and colleagues, she received a Golden Apple Award and an award for decades of Teaching Excellence.
Dot was a communicant of St. Nicholas of Myra (formerly St. Joseph's) Church of North Dighton, where she participated with her father and dear friends John and Elsie Evangelho on many fundraising events, and was a long-time member of the Women's Guild.
In addition to spending time with family, Dot enjoyed getting together with friends, playing cards, reading, dining out, knitting, and traveling with her husband and lifelong friends, the late Jack and Betty Waterman.
Dot was the proud mother of the late Debra A. Fredericks. wife of Douglas R. Fredericks of Sandwich; Peter K. Torres and Diane M. Torres of North Dighton; and James F. Torres, partner of P. Bryce Avery, of Revere.
Beloved grandchildren are Christian D. Fredericks and wife Lydia of Rehoboth; Robert D. Fredericks and wife Terri of North Dighton; Julie A. Preston and husband Damien of North Dighton; Lois G. Medeiros of Bridgewater; Brian F. Torres and wife Daniela Fairchild of Riverside, RI; and Mark W. Torres of Sandy, Utah.
Dot, affectionately known as Gram, had a special love for her 12 great grandchildren: Ashley, Emma, Christian Jr., Aaron, Lily, Maddux, Willow, Alexa, Violet, David, Norah, and Adan.
Dot's large and loving family included sisters-in-law the late Adele Rose, wife of the late Clinton Rose, of Dighton; Estelle Rose, wife of Robert Rose, Sr, or Rehoboth; and Elizabeth Hebert, wife of Vincent Hebert Sr. of Somerset; dear friends Gary D. Buseck of Taunton, and Susan M. McGuirk of Taunton, MA; and many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Calling hours will be Monday, August 1, from 4 to 7 pm at the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave., Taunton. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, August 2 at 11 am at St. Nicholas of Myra Church, 499 Spring Street, North Dighton.
