Obituary

Donald A. Sylvia, 89, of Fairhaven passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 in St. Luke Hospital.  He was the husband to the late Dorothy Mae (Gill) Sylvia.  He was the son of the late Walter Sylvia Sr and the late Lenora “Nora” (Viera) Sylvia. 

Donald is survived by his three children; Donna M. Koczera and her husband Steven of Fairhaven, MA, Diane I. Sylvia of Fairhaven, MA and Donald J. Sylvia and his wife Susan of Sassaquin, MA.  His grandchildren Carrie Butler and her husband Michael and Jason and his wife Ashley.  His three great grand children Chad Estes, Gavin Koczera and Hudson Koczera.  Donald was the brother of Robert “Bobby” Sylvia of New Bedford and the late Walter Sylvia.

Donald was born and raised in New Bedford and attended New Bedford schools.  He would spend school vacations and summer at his uncle’s farm in Dartmouth.  In 1951, He volunteered to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War and served until 1953.  He earned the Army of Occupation Medal.  After his service he went on to marry the love of his life, Dorothy.  They moved to Fairhaven to raise their family in 1955.  He was a Communicant of St. Joseph Church in Fairhaven.  Donald enjoyed gardening and a strong affinity for animals.  Most of all Donald enjoyed being with his family and friends.
