David R. Makin, 65, of Fairhaven passed away peacefully Sunday, June 5, 2022 at home after a long illness. He was the former husband of Ana M. (Tenreiro) Makin of New Bedford.
Born in New Bedford, son of Robert R. Makin of Fairhaven and the late Mary (Durant) Fish, he grew up in Wareham and settled in Fairhaven in 1986. He was a graduate of Upper Cape Regional Vocational High School and later served in the Coast Guard for six years.
David loved being out on the water whether it was fishing, quahoging or just taking the boat out and kicking back at the beach with family and friends. He also enjoyed camping, going to the shooting range and playing horseshoes. He also loved spending time with his grandson whom he adored.
David was a sergeant for the MA Environmental Police for 17 years until his retirement. He worked on the patrol boats “Evelyn” and “Jessie” from the RI border to Cape Ann. Prior to that he worked at MA Maritime Academy in the small boats department. He also had various jobs on fishing, ferry and tug boats.
He is survived by his father, Robert “Russ” Makin; a son, Scott D. Makin of Fairhaven and his son, Caysin Makin; his former wife Ana; a brother, Stephen Makin of New Bedford; a sister, Debra Lamonde of Fairhaven; and several nieces and nephews.
in accordance with his wishes he was cremated and memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 9:30-11:30am in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 main St., Fairhaven. interment in the MA National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
