God bless Uncle Bert. He taught me more than I’m sure he ever realized he did. I respected him more than he knew and I was listening when he thought maybe I wasn’t. He meant a lot to me, I learned a lot from him. Thank you Uncle Bert.

Sending love and sympathy to the Hamel family. Uncle Bert was loved by all! Every one of us has great memories of our visits to Westport and Uncle Bert was a huge part of those wonderful experiences. Every time I saw Uncle Bert, he would light up with a smile and make a point to talk with me. He always made me feel special, which I am sure is true of everyone who knew him. He was a great man and will be deeply missed.

Uncle Bert's wide & easy smile . . . was the 1st thing I saw when we came up for air after capsizing his daysailer after about 10 minutes of me holding the till.   He'd let me show off new & untested skills in unfamiliar (to me) waters & then let me figure out a way to get the boat right.  Then he allowed me to sail us back.

That meant more to me than I ever told him - it's a memory I've held with a smile in my heart for nearly 5 decades.

I remember that he'd often stop the car on that rise near his house - taking in that glorious river vista - he'd pause to say "look at that!"

It was a cool Uncle Bert lesson. Stopping.  Taking a minute to appreciate where you are, where you're going & taking the mistakes & minor catastrophes along the way with an easy smile.

One less April Fool in the world.   Love to all who loved Uncle Bert.
