Bertrand Fernand Hamel (96) a resident of Westport, MA died Tuesday, January 5th in his home in Westport, MA. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Ballem) Hamel, who died in 1995.
Born in Lewiston, ME, Bert was raised by a hard-working single mother. He joined the Marine Corps and served in World War II in the South Pacific and Japan. Upon graduating from Bentley College in 1948, Bert joined the General Electric Company in Providence. Bert earned his way to the executive level, bringing his family to live in Puerto Rico, Italy and Spain and establishing three GE plants abroad.
After thirty four years of dedicated service to GE, Bert retired to live full-time in his home overlooking the Westport River. He spent his retirement years enjoying his large family, golfing at the Acoaxet Club, traveling, and enjoying countless cruises with his partner of over twenty years, Jane Wetherell.
Bert is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Grover) Baxley and Martha (Michael) Fisher, two sons, Robert (Deborah) Hamel and Jason Hamel, ten grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of forty seven years, Barbara, and his daughter, Lari Wolz. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember their Pepere playing cards, taking them water skiing on the river, teaching them how to dive in his beloved pool, blasting Big Band music, and keeping his refrigerator stocked with treats as he graciously hosted countless friends and family. His unwavering positivity, quick compliments, and endearing charm will be sorely missed by all who knew him. C'est la vie, Pepere, and what a wonderful life it was.
Burial services will be private for immediate family, with plans to host a memorial party at his home when COVID regulations permit.
