Barbara J. Vieira

July 18, 2021

This is the story of Barbara Joan (Cabral) Vieira. Barbara was a wonderful woman who will be missed dearly by many and will always be cherished and loved. Barbara was an amazing wife, mother, daughter, VV (Vovó), mother-in-law, sister, cousin, aunt, neighbor, and friend.

Barbara’s story starts on April 29, 1943.  Barbara was the child of Mary (Rapoza) Cabral and Everett Cabral.  Barbara grew up and enjoyed her childhood playing and spending time with several of her cousins and friends.

Born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts, Barbara graduated from Durfee High School (Class of 61) and attended Bridgewater State University to pursue a career in education.  Barbara’s college studies conflicted with family priorities that included supporting her mother during and after her father’s illness.  However, family responsibilities of being a daughter, a wife, and a mother did not deter Barbara from continuing her education and working as an office bookkeeper at multiple organizations in her adult life.

In 1966, Barbara met the man of her dreams, William Joseph Vieira.  Barbara and William were married on April 29, 1967 (yep her birthday).  William’s military service in the Air Force led the newlyweds to live briefly in Florida until settling down in Rhode Island.  From their first dates which included attending the Sound of Music movie, to raising and nurturing two great sons, William James Vieira and James William Vieira, to being a part of her granddaughter’s life, Barbara and William’s journey of fifty-four years together was filled with enjoyment and some challenges.  Their immense love for each never wavered and grew stronger throughout their five-plus decades of marriage.

Barbara enjoyed traveling, whether the journey included a trip to the Christmas Tree Shop or venturing to Walt Disney Word during the Christmas holidays.  She loved playing with her doggies; from Snoopy, Shadow, Lady, Jake and currently Brady.  She enjoyed the Fourth of July family cookouts, Christmas Eve family get-togethers, and trips to Grinnells Beach to watch the sailboats.  She delighted in sweets especially eclairs and banana splits.  She loved her shopping, particularly QVC.  She looked forward to her trips to Foxwoods to play bingo.  She loved viewing animal videos on Pinterest and sharing those videos with family.  Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Loved ones that will miss Barbara, until they meet again, include her husband Bill, her sons William and James, her daughter-in-law Dayna Brenneke Vieira, and her granddaughter Julia Alexandria Vieira.  Others who grieve but look forward to the day reuniting with Barbara include her cousin Doris (Perry) Brassard (the sister she never had), many other cousins including Helen (Rapoza) Costa, Marion (Rapoza) Roy, and the late Connie (Rapoza) Melanson, her sister-in-law Anna (Vieira) Murphy, friends including Shirley Martin and several nieces and nephews.

And so Barbara’s story goes on until we see her again. We love you and miss you Barbara.

In conclusion, to quote song lyrics Barbara’s husband would first sing to her when they dated and again sang by her bedside prior to her journey to heaven:

“Goodnight, my love.
Pleasant dreams and sleep well my love.

May tomorrow be sunny and bright.

In the heavens above.

Goodnight, my love.
Sleep well, my love”.
