William J. Snigier,

November 24, 2018

Obituary

William J. Snigier, MD, 65, died unexpectedly in the early morning of November 24, 2018.

He is survived by brothers, David Snigier and his wife Annette of Raynham, Jean Snigier, John Snigier and his dear friend Sandra Leonard; nephews, David Snigier, Jr., Joseph Snigier and his wife Tegan; niece, Rosemary; and sister-in-law Barbara Snigier of The Villages, Florida. He was predeceased by his brother Paul, and his parents Mary and Anthony.

Always a scholastic achiever, Bill interrupted his education at the age of 17 when he dove into a swimming pool and broke his neck, becoming a quadriplegic. After a few years and with the help of his mother Mary and his father Anthony he overcame some of the associated obstacles and finished high school, junior college and decided he wanted to make something important of his life and turned to medicine.

Bill attended University of MA Medical College in Amherst where, despite his disability he graduated with honors as the first medical student that not only graduated as a quadriplegic, but also entered medical college as a quadriplegic. Bill became a physiatrist with a specialty in spinal cord injury. He held a Fellowship with Harvard Medical College in spinal injuries and served a full residency at various hospitals in the Massachusetts and Rhode Island area including Mass General, St. Josephs, VA in Brockton and Roxbury, Brockton Hospital and several others. Bill was an example and gave hope to better themselves to many ill and afflicted people. As a resident, after his shift ended he would often be found staying with terminally ill patients and people that had no one visiting them to keep them company.

Bill had a quick wit and a ready smile. His hobbies were listening to oldies music, and especially fine guitar music. He enjoyed his classic muscle cars - his restored classic 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado and his 1971 GTO until he no longer could drive them, but kept them up any way. Bill will be sorely missed by his family, colleagues, many friends throughout the nation. He was a philanthropist, giving to mostly medical research and development for various maladies.

His funeral will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018, at 11am, in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave., Taunton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Taunton.
