Sara L. Pheeney, 88, of Attleboro, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at Madonna Manor, in North Attleborough. She was the widow of the late Alan Pheeney.
Sally, as she was universally known, was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Irving and Helen (Dunham) Ashland. She was a 1951 graduate of Simmons College with a BS degree in psychology. Subsequently she furthered her studies at Rhode Island College, Northeastern University and Boston University concentrating on early childhood education and elementary school guidance counselor programs. She was a member of the faculties at Stonehill College, Boston University, and Wheaton College before joining the faculty of Bridgewater State University where she was designated a tenured, full professor in 1995.
During middle age, her husband Alan was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Not only did Sally carry on her professional career but she also managed to care for Alan during his lengthy illness. Although Sally and Alan did not have children, they were always surrounded by their beloved cats. In their home the cats ruled. Additionally, in later years, Sally was quite proud of the large group of wild turkeys which would congregate in her backyard.
To those who knew her, Sally displayed a keen intellect and a dry sense of humor. She was a generous donor to a number of local nonprofit organizations.
She is survived by several nieces.
