Ruth (Bloom) Filler, 100, passed away Wednesday, April, 18, 2018, in the Royal Nursing Center, Fairhaven. She was the widow of Seymour Filler.
Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Oscar Bloom and the late Fanny (Kaufman) Bloom, she lived all of her life in the city.
Ruth Filler went back to college in her 40's to get her Bachelor's degree, attending local colleges in the evenings. In the 1950's and 1960's, she was the Temple Beth El librarian, turning a dusty collection of books into an up-to-date living library of Jewish literature. Ruth went on to become a valued and much beloved remedial reading teacher for many years in the Fall River school system. In the 1980's she and her husband Seymour mentored young Russian-Jewish immigrants who settled in Fall River. Ruth and Seymour enjoyed a rich cultural life filled with books, theater, film, opera, symphonic music, and museums.
Their love of travel took them to cities in the United States, Great Britain, Europe, and the State of Israel. In their later years, they participated in Elderhostel, education travel trips for seniors, and enjoyed seminars and lectures in places all over the U.S.
She is survived by a son, Mark Filler of Portland, Maine and a daughter, Sara Ann Fox of California; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
