Roger Samplis Costa passed into eternal life on September 6. He was the husband of Helene Agnes (Lavoie) Costa with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. They made their home in Somerset, MA.
Roger was born on September 15, 1935, in Fall River, to Samplis Costa and Ruth E. (Rogers) Costa. He was brought up in the Steep Brook part of the city, moving to Somerset as a young man.
Roger, an outdoorsman, loved fresh water fly fishing, tied his own flies, and belonged to the Rhody Flyrodders club. He was a self-employed toolmaker and industrial designer and as the proprietor of L. H. Cook of East Providence and Spearhead Moulds of Fall River he created and marketed a high-end fly tying vice and many other products. He loved working with wood as well, and built his own house, made furniture, and after being diagnosed with ALS, built a wood canoe, Wee Lass. Roger was also a lover of cars, an avid NASCAR fan, and spent hours in the pits at Seekonk Speedway.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Helene, his children Suzanne Costa Baldaia and her husband Ernest G. Mayo of Warren, RI, Kevin Costa and his wife Alison of Somerset, and Helene Costa and her husband Richard Brodeur of Somerset. Roger leaves his grandchildren Shayna Costa of Hopkinton, MA, Dusty Cyr of Fall River, and Michela Joubert of Providence. Roger also leaves his sisters Kathleen Venice and her husband Paul of Swansea, Elizabeth (Betty) Faria (predeceased by her husband Frank) of Somerset, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be private, and a celebration of life will be held at a future date. Arrangements with the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, Somerset, MA.
