Rita (Vallier) Souza, 92, of Fairhaven, passed away peacefully at home Friday, April 12, 2019. She was the wife of the late Joseph Souza, Jr.
Born and raised in New Bedford, daughter of the late George and Natalie (Cyr) Vallier, she settled in Fairhaven in 1969 an was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.
An avid gardener, Rita loved nature and being outdoors in the sun. She was particularly fond of her flower gardens and watching her favorite birds like gold finches, humming birds and cardinals. Mrs. Souza was a very talented artist and an accomplished seamstress who loved working with her hands.
In her younger days she enjoyed boating with her family and often visited Cuttyhunk and Penikese Islands. When weather permitted, it was off to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard.
A wonderful Mom who had a heart of gold. She was truly a Saint who cherished being with family and adored her five great grandchildren. Rita was extremely independent and always sharp as a tack.
She will always be loved and missed, never ever be forgotten. God bless Mom. Her memories will live on forever.
She is survived by a son, James D. Souza and his wife Rose-Marie of Fairhaven; a daughter, Cheryl A. Forand and her husband Gordon of Rochester; four grandchildren, Jodi L. Forand Connors and her husband Christian, James N. Souza, Jessica M. Labelle and her husband Scott and Katelyn E. Souza and her fiancé Ian Aiello; and five great grandchildren, Tristan Connors, Ayla and Avery Labelle, Isaiah and Gianna Aiello. Mrs. Souza was the sister of the late Doris Therien.
A special thanks to Diane P., R.N. and Amanda, C.N.A. of Hospice for helping the family care for Rita at home.
In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated and a Memorial Mass will be Celebrated Monday, April 22, 2019, at 9AM, in St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven. Burial will be private.
Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
