Dr. Peter Rizzi, of Plymouth, MA, died suddenly and unexpectedly at home, on December 31, 2017. He was the husband of Judith Leyland Rizzi and was a pioneer of microwave engineering. Born in Providence, R.I., on December 10, 1930, he was the son of Pasquale and Rosaria Rizzi.
Dr. Rizzi earned his B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island and both his Master's and Doctorate from Yale University where he was a Fortescue Fellow. He began his career in Ferrite Components at the Raytheon Company and then in Solid-State Devices at the Ewen-Knight Corporation. He then co-founded Microwave Technology which became part of Alpha Industries where he served as Vice President.
Later Dr. Rizzi joined the faculty in Electrical Engineering at UMass Dartmouth where he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Microwave Engineering. He wrote the textbook Microwave Engineering - Passive Circuits which has been translated into several languages and used in universities around the world. Dr. Rizzi was a proud member of IEEE, ASEE, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu.
Besides his devotion to his wife and family, Dr. Rizzi was an avid golfer (playing 500 different courses around the US and Europe,) loved all genres of music, as well as, creating and solving difficult math problems. His big smile, gleam in his eye, animated story telling and compassionate heart will be missed by all who knew him. His family hopes he is now enjoying the best sfogliatelle ever and picking the brains of Fibonacci and Tesla.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, Michael P. Rizzi and his partner Terri Manning of Oakland, CA, James A. Rizzi of Frankfurt, Germany, Vanessa R. Rizzi of Mansfield, MA and Tania M. Rizzi and her husband Brian McCormick of Watertown, MA and two step-children, William K. Clark of Mattapoisett, MA and Priscilla L. Meunier and her husband Jason of Lakeville, MA. He leaves seven grandchildren; Lily and Addy Hiltebeitel, Margot and Audrey McCormick, Rocco Rizzi and Jake and Clay Meunier. He leaves a dear sister Lucy Gugliemi and her husband Anthony of Norwich, CT and a niece and nephew. He is also survived by Verna Rizzi, mother of his four children.
