Millicent "Millie" (Swift) Harris, 100, of Concord, NH, formerly of Somerset, MA, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2019, at The Birches at Concord, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Lennis G. Harris, whom she married in 1943.
She was born in Marlborough, MA, the daughter of the late Floyd and Bernice (Pierce) Swift. Millicent was educated in Somerset and graduated from Somerset High School in 1937. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from Simmons College in 1941. Mrs. Harris resided in several states and overseas while her husband was enlisted in the military, returning to her childhood home in Somerset in 1968. In addition to caring for her family, she enjoyed playing cards, listening to Red Sox and Bruins games, and doing craft projects. She spent many summer days at Little Pine Tree Island on Lake Winnipesaukee.
Millicent was a member of the Congregational Christian Church, in Somerset, and was active with the Somerset Woman's Club, the Somerset Historical Society, and served on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross Greater Fall River Chapter. Mrs. Harris was a tireless volunteer at Charlton Memorial Hospital and oversaw many Red Cross blood drives as chair of the Somerset Blood Committee. She received several awards from the AMVETS Post #72 in Somerset, including the Outstanding Community Work Award in 1984 and the Citizen of the Year Award in 1997. Mrs. Harris also received the Humanitarian Award from the Somerset Lions Club in 2001.
She is survived by her children Cynthia Harris of Easthampton, MA, David Harris of Concord, NH, and Gerald Harris of Franklin Park, NJ, her nephew Richard Fox of Fremont, NH, two grandnephews and several great grandnephews and great grandnieces, as well as many friends and extended family members, including Susan Fox of Hudson, MA, who knew her as "Aunt Millie." She was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Fox.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. Harris will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019, at 2:00pm, in the Congregational Christian Church, 1411 County Street, Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Private burial will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery Bourne.
