Maryan L. Nowak, 87, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Helen A. (Walach) Nowak, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.

Maryan was born and raised in the Whittenton section of Taunton. He was the son of Polish immigrant parents, the late Stanley and Stella (Wadach) Nowak.

A lifelong resident of Taunton, Maryan was a 1949 graduate of Taunton High School. He earned his BS in Education from Fitchburg State College, in 1953, and his Masters in Education from Bridgewater State College, in 1956. He taught Industrial Arts in Attleboro for two years while attending Boston University for post-graduate study. In 1958 he began a 32 year career in educational therapy and rehab at the newly-opened Brockton VA Hospital. After retiring from the VA, he returned to teaching at the Bristol Plymouth Vocational School, retiring 17 years later in 2003.

Maryan began his second career in the US Army Reserve, enlisting as a private in 1953. He was commissioned a captain in 1964 and continued serving in medical units, including the 399th Combat Support Hospital of Taunton, of which he became commander. He later served as the Chief of Staff for the 804th Hospital Center near Boston. He served honorably for nearly 33 years, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1986.

During his dual career and throughout retirement, Maryan was also involved in public service activities, civic organizations and advisory groups. He often recalled his five year commitment as chair of the group that successfully designated the Three Mile River Corridor as an area of environmental concern.

He is survived by his children, Michael P. Nowak and his wife Brook of Bolton, CT and Kristina M. Cullen and her husband Joseph of Braintree, MA; grandchildren, Maxim Nowak and Jared and Kyler Cullen.
