Lucia (Baptista) Vasconcellos, 72, of New Bedford passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019, after a long illness at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth, peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Born and raised on the Island of Madeira, Portugal, the daughter of Joao and Fernanda (Mendes) Baptista. Lucia came here when she was 23 years old. She had been a schoolteacher in Madeira and when she came to New Bedford had worked as a CNA at Hathaway Manor.
She enjoyed trips to Foxwoods, cooking and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy M. Johnson of Dartmouth; two grandchildren, Lily and Oliver Johnson of Dartmouth; three brothers, Joao Baptista of Madeira, Carlos Baptista and his wife Maria of New Bedford and Bert Baptista and his wife Susan of Acushnet; three sisters, Fernanda Thomas of South Dartmouth, Ester Fernandez of North Dartmouth and Ligia Baptista of New Bedford; a brother in law, Manny Carvalho of Acushnet; her former husband, Duarte Vasconcellos and many nieces and nephews. Lucia was the sister of the late Egidio Baptista and Filomena Carvalho.
In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated and private arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St. Fairhaven.
