Lindsey S. Gifford, Jr, 94, of Fairhaven, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2019, at Brandon Woods of New Bedford after a long period of declining health. He was the husband of 68 years to Gloria E. (Reed) Gifford.
Born and raised in Fairhaven, son of the late Lindsey S. and Ruth (Bumpus) Gifford, he lived most of his life in the town and was a graduate of Fairhaven High School and New Bedford Textile University. He served in the Army Air Corp. during WWII and later, Lindsey worked as a textile chemist for various companies starting at ICI then Pond Lily in Connecticut and finally Arkwright until his retirement.
He was a longtime, active member of the Acushnet Wesley United Methodist Church where he was the choir director for many years. Lindsey was a Past Master of the George H. Taber Lodge AF & AM in Fairhaven, an avid golfer, a bowler at Bowl Mor in Mattapoisett. He coached Little League and was a Cub Scout Leader when his children were young, but his main passion was music, and he belonged to the Cape Cod Light Opera Company and sang tenor in the Barbershop Quartet.
He is survived by his loving wife Gloria; a daughter, Susan R. Alves of New Bedford; three sons, Lindsey S. Gifford, III and his wife Luann of Portland, Oregon, David J. Gifford of Fairhaven and Peter R. Gifford and his fiancé Cyndi Luis of New Bedford; a daughter in law, Robin Gifford of Franklin; 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Mark S. Gifford and is also survived by Mark's companion, Sandy Sabino of New Bedford and he was the brother of the late Phyllis Gifford.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated, Saturday, September 7, 2019, at 2pm, in the Acushnet-Wesley United Methodist Church, 67 Main St., Acushnet, MA 02743. Interment will be private.
Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Lindsey's name to the Acushnet-Wesley United Methodist Church.
