Leonard Catabia

December 30, 2017

Obituary

Leonard Catabia 74, of Dighton, passed away suddenly on December 30, 2017, in Providence, RI. He was surrounded at the time of his passing by his devoted family and friends. They comforted each other as Lenny would have done for them. He was the loving husband of Barbara (Andrade) Catabia formerly of Swansea, who was his soul-mate in life and business.

Lenny was born in Dighton, on March 23, 1943, to a prominent farming family, the son of the late Louis and Louise (Cambra) Catabia.

Lenny was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 4. He owned and operated Catabia and Son Excavating, in Dighton, with his son Leonard for many years, helping to build many local land marks including the Dighton Water Treatment Plant, bridges and many private homes in the Dighton area. They also specialized in snow and ice removal for the State of Massachusetts and commercial properties for over 45 years.

Lenny also operated the family farm full time and also multiple rental farms in Berkley, Swansea, Seekonk, and New York, totaling over 100 acres. They mainly supplied Stop and Shop where they delivered their vegetables for over 30 years. In his spare time, Lenny was an accomplished hunter. When hunting season came, he would head off to Canada, Maine, Vermont and New York, and brought home many trophy deer, bear and moose over the years.

Lenny's greatest joy in life was his grandchildren. He deeply enjoyed attending all of their school and athletic events, where he was a very vocal supporter. His cheering and jeering will be missed by so many.

Lenny will also be greatly missed by his family, neighbors, employees, hunting buddies, and countless others who came in contact with him every day.

He is survived by his children, Chan Carey and her husband Michael of Plympton, MA and Leonard Catabia, Jr. and his wife Christine of Swansea; grandchildren, Michael and Julia Carey of Plympton and Leonard Catabia, III of Swansea; sister, Lucille King of Dighton; niece Michelle (King) Borrello and her husband John; nephew Joseph King, his wife Deana (Azevedo) King all of Dighton and a large loving extended family.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 8:30am, from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton Street, Somerset, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 10am, in St. Mary's Church, 114 St. Mary's Square, Taunton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Burial will follow in the Dighton Unitarian Church Cemetery.

Calling Hours will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018, from 4-8pm, in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the Catabia family would like donations in Lenny's name sent to St. Vincents home for Children, 2425 Highland Ave., Fall River, MA 02720.
