Obituary

John F. Dator, 90, a longtime resident and past Selectman of Somerset, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017.

Born in Fall River, son of Santiago and Laura (Beckett) Dator, John lived in Fall River until moving to Somerset in 1957. A World War II Navy veteran, and Brown University Graduate, after college John went into real estate and insurance sales, and started a lifetime of community service. He founded the John Dator Agency, in Fall River, in 1951, which he continued for most of his life.

Mr. Dator also maintained an active volunteer presence in both the Somerset and Fall River communities throughout his entire life. John's leadership included: State Jaycees president; MA Association of Realtors president; Fall River Association of Realtors president; long time board member and past president of the Fall River Boys and Girls Club, (which he was a member of for over 70 years); Trustee of Truesdale Hospital; long time board member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Charlton Healthcare Systems. John was instrumental in the merging of the Truesdale and Union Hospitals and the transition into Charlton Memorial Hospital; Long time Trustee, Vice President and Chairman of the Board Bank Five, South Eastern Mass SER/Jobs for Progress, and Board of Directors; United Way Campaign Chairperson; Somerset COA; Treasurer Citizens for Citizens; Somerset Economic Development Committee; Chairman Somerset board of Selectman; Building committee Somerset Berkley regional high school; Somerset Insurance Underwriters; Somerset Council on Aging; and Volunteer case reviewer for the Dept. of Social Services.

John was also the recipient of numerous community awards including: Peter B. Sabra Humanitarian Award; Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce, Outstanding Citizen of the Year, 1st recipient; Massachusetts Realtor of the Year; Boys & Girls Club Volunteer of the Year; Realtor Emeritus.

John is survived by a son, John "Jack" Dator, Jr. and his fiancé Nancy Perrin of Berkley; two daughters, Nanci Dator of Vineyard Haven, MA and Jayne Dator-Freeman and her husband David of Japan; three grandsons, John Dator-Freeman, John Dator III, Evan Dator-Freeman and one granddaughter Chelsey Dator; two great granddaughters, Sage Moon Dator and Alani Hokao Dator Freeman and a longtime loving companion Susan M Sirois and extended family, Madeleine Sirois, Monique Kilby, Simone Sirois, Claudine Sirois, John Sirois, Mark Sirois and Robert L. J. Sirois

Funeral Information
Mr. Dator's funeral will be held Friday, December 15th, 2017, at 10 AM, in the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA 02726, with burial to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
