Helen (Costa) Luiz, 89, of Acushnet passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital, in New Bedford. She was the wife of the late Antone A. Luiz.
Born and raised in New Bedford, daughter of the late William and Edith Mae(DeBettencourt) Costa, she settled in Acushnet in 1954.
Helen graduated from New Bedford High School and later Garber's Driving School. She worked as a driving instructor for 49 years for Lund's Corner Driving School and she also taught Driver's Ed at Bishop Stang High School for many years.
She and her husband enjoyed camping, hunting, bicycling, spending time with her grandchildren and she was the manager of the Toreador's Drum and Bugle Corp.
She is survived by two daughters, Dianne Luiz-Abram of Acushnet and Beckeanne Drouin and her husband Donald of New Bedford; a brother, William Costa of Maine; eight grandchildren, Kendra Abram, Cameron, Amber, Cordealya, Kalib, Ophelia, Ivy and Gabriel Drouin; two nieces, Kathy Dow and Laurie Koontz; a nephew, Stephen Dow and a Godchild, James "Butch" Luiz. Mrs. Luiz was the mother in law of the late Robert Abram and sister of the late Ruth Dow.
In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 10:00am, in St. Joseph's Church, in Fairhaven. Interment will follow in Acushnet Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
