Gilbert N. Alves, 80, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, May 21, 2018 at the Sippican Healthcare Center after 13 years of living with Alzheimer's disease.
Born in New Bedford on September 30, 1937, he was the middle of 7 children of the late Manuel C. and Yvonne (Richard) Alves. Part of a vibrant Catholic community, they lived by the credo "Family is Everything." Three languages were spoken in their home.
Gilly met the love of his life, Patricia (Heath) Alves at a Lincoln Park dance, and they were married in 1962, just as his Army National Guard unit was activated. The newlyweds moved to North Carolina, where he was stationed during the Cuban Missile Crisis, until they eventually settled in Acushnet, where they lived for 45 years and raised 4 children to know the value of hard work, family and faith.
Gilly attended New Bedford Vocational Technical School and was a talented woodworker and carpenter. He graduated from the New Bedford Institute of Technology with a degree in Textile Engineering, and worked for the Department of Defense at the Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility (NCTRF) for 25 years, until he retired in 1998. He saw the uniforms he designed worn by the men and women of the US Navy all over the world. He walked 4 miles a day, loved to dance, and treasured his time with his 7 grandchildren.
Left to honor Gilly and remember his love are his wife of 56 years, two sons: Chief Michael G. Alves (Lisa), Acushnet Police Dept., of Fairhaven, Mark L. Alves (Lauren); two daughters, Karen P. Alves-Cronin (Michael) of Marion and Ann-Marie Kirshon (Larry) of Norton; seven grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Matthew, Julia, Amelia, Jake, and Sofia; a brother, Brother Paul R. Alves, SS.CC. of Fairhaven; sister in law, Jeanne Alves of Falmouth; brother in law, Bernard Silva of New Bedford and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Alves was the brother of the late Victor, Gerard and Richard Alves, Cecile Couture and Therese Silva.
