George Sylvia, 79, of Fairhaven, passed away unexpectedly at home, Wednesday, December 13, 2017. He was born and raised in New Bedford, on June 27, 1938, son of the late Joseph and Laura Theresa (Sylvia) Sylvia and settled in Fairhaven in 1976.
He served in the Army as an Infantry Engineer from December of 1955-December of 1958. He then became a commercial fisherman for over 20 years until his retirement in the late 1970's. George was a caring, giving and beloved father and grandfather, and devoted friend to many.
He is survived by a son, Michael W. Sylvia of New Bedford; three daughters, Laura Marie Sylvia of Seattle, WA, and Connie Lynn Rogerson and Rita Moniz both of New Bedford; a sister, Anna Ferreira of Fall River; 12 grandchildren; five great grandchildren. He was the father of the late George J. Sylvia, Lisa J. Polotnik and Angelina St. Pierre and brother of the late Arlene Pacheco.
Calling hours are Monday, from 4-7pm, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at 11:00am, in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven.
