Esmeralda S. "Esther" (Garganta) Carvalho, 88, of Fairhaven, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2018, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, in Fall River. She was the wife of Fred Carvalho of Fairhaven.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Sousa) Garganta, she lived most of her life in Dartmouth prior to settling in Fairhaven in 2008. She was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene, on Hathaway Rd., in New Bedford.
Esther had worked as a dietary aid at St. Luke's Hospital, in New Bedford. She also had worked as a stitcher prior to the hospital. She was a Foster Grandparent and a volunteer in the maternity ward at St. Luke's where she enjoyed rocking the babies. She was a member of the St. Luke's Retiree's and the Senior Corp.
Survivors include her husband, Fred; four sons, Patrick McAuliffe and his wife Diane of New Bedford, Robert McAuliffe and his wife Maureen of North Dartmouth, Wayne McAuliffe and his husband David Nowell of North Grafton and Daniel McAuliffe and his wife Debra of Dayton Beach, FL; three daughters, Linda Arnum and Paula Ramos both of New Bedford and Anita Moses and her fiancé Paul Stone of South Dartmouth; a sister, Natalie Furtado and her husband Everett of New Bedford; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Carvalho was the sister of the late Alvaro, Manuel, Antone, Horace, Arnold, Mario and Daniel Garganta and Mary Beck.
A public graveside service will be held Monday, October 15, 2018, at 11:00am, in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven.
All other arrangements are private under the direction of the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
In lieu of flowers, Esther requested donation be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
