Elsie Lorraine (Wallace) Tuxworth died peacefully Saturday, April 6, 2019, at her home. She was 96. Lorraine was the widow of Frederick C. Tuxworth and the daughter of the late Roy and Anna Wallace.
Lorraine was born on the North Fork of the Walla Walla River near Milton-Freewater, Oregon, on December 10, 1922, one of eight children. After high school, she attended Oregon State University, leaving to become a secretary for the Navy in Sitka, Alaska, during WWII. There she met and married Ens. Fred Tuxworth.
After the war, they settled in Lafayette, Indiana and started a family. In 1960, she and her young family moved to Mattapoisett. She learned to sail, enjoying the waters from Buzzard's bay to Maine. When her children grew older, she became a teacher's aide, working at the Old Hammondtown and Rochester Memorial Schools.
She and Fred moved to Ohio, where she worked for the Cleveland Clinic. Upon returning to Mattapoisett, they enjoyed their retirement, Lorraine becoming an avid Bridge player, making many friends. She was a Boston Celitic fan. She was bright and generous and will be missed.
Survivors include her son, Douglas, her grandson, Graham, her sister, Billie Saether and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and her son, Gregory.
Funeral services will be private, under the direction of the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
