Eliza J. Sabra

October 6, 2018

Obituary

Eliza J. Sabra, age 92, of Somerset, passed away peacefully at Somerset Ridge Center, in Somerset, on October 6, 2018. She was the wife of the late Peter B. Sabra who preceded her in death in 2005.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Francisco and Maria Gonsalves Joao from the Madeira Islands. She had two brothers who predeceased her, Manuel and James Joao.

Eliza, known by many as "Lee", married Peter Sabra in 1948 at the Immaculate Conception Parish, in New Bedford, and moved to Fall River and then to Somerset where she resided for the past 67 years. She worked many years for Allied Business Forms and traveled many miles as a saleswoman across the Southcoast and Rhode Island.

Things that brought her the greatest joy were visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren and collecting pictures of them to adorn her room. She loved Martha's Vineyard where she spent many summers in her youth, the ocean and swimming at South Shore in Little Compton, and in her prime was an accomplished knitter and seamstress. Eliza was known for her delicious homemade squash pies and blueberry muffins. Until the last two years, she was a regular at the gym where she would train and workout. People often told family members that they didn't like to be next to her on the treadmill where she would put them to shame for her age.

She leaves a son, Attorney Steven Sabra and his wife, Judge Bernadette Sabra, of Somerset, and a daughter, Jayne Kelly and her late husband, James Kelly, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. She has five granddaughters, Jill Watson, Alexandra O'Connell, Stephanie Sabra, Christina Sabra, and Julianna Sabra. She also leaves five great grandchildren, Hunter, Parker and Cole Watson, and Liam and Adelaide O'Connell.

The family would also like to thank the staff at Somerset Ridge Center for their care of Eliza over the past year and a half. Their kindness will not be forgotten. At the end, Compassionate Care Hospice is also acknowledged for their care of Eliza.

Her family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, October 13, 2018, from 9:00 to 10:00 am, in St. Thomas More Church, 386 Luther Avenue, Somerset, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 am.

Other arrangements held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Herren Project, P.O. Box 131, Portsmouth, Rhode Island 02871.
