Elaine Yvonne Silvia (née Machado), 11/06/40-12/7/18, Passed away peacefully at Massachusetts General Hospital, with her oldest daughter at her bedside. She was the widow of David Silvia. They were married for 44 years.
In pursuit of a career in childcare and healthcare, Elaine graduated from Diman Vocational Technical High School, in Fall River, with a concentration in those disciplines. After various jobs in the retail industry, she was able to follow her passion in healthcare and began working as a nursing assistant, a vocation in which she spent the rest of her professional life in before retiring from Charlton Memorial Hospital in 2002. A dedicated advocate of childcare, she often served as the role mother for those who were missing a motherly figure, and to the day of her passing she is affectionately referred to as "Grandma" by not only her grandchildren but the friends of her grandchildren as well.
Elaine was a woman of many passions, and she pursued them to the fullest of her ability. She was well-traveled, taking many vacations to tropical paradises with her late husband David, her sister and best friend Nancy and their good friends Darlene and her late husband Bob Leonardo. Elaine loved the summer months and spent much of her leisure time laying out on the patio of her daughter's pool. She looked forward to her winter trips to visit her brother in Florida. She was always the first swimmer in and last one out of the pool. She loved her "sister parties" hosted by her oldest sister Claire and she loved playing slot machines, and took countless weekend trips to casinos with her sisters, Nancy and Irene, including trips to Las Vegas. An avid reader, Elaine's kindle was stored with hundreds of novels she read during her retirement. She was also an amateur bird watcher, she loved decorating the yard with birdhouses, even hand crafting bird houses herself, which she used to attract hummingbirds, robins, and other creatures of a firmament to the gardens of her children's homes. But most of all Elaine was an omnipresent and vocal spectator at her grandchildren's sporting events. She never missed a game, braving inclement weather to watch football games, and the scorching heat of summer to cheer in the bleachers at the Swansea baseball fields. Her favorite topic of discussion was her Grandsons' athletic successes, and she was a staple in the Swansea athletic community.
