Obituary

Constance R. (Sherman) Sameiro, 85, of New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly at home Sunday, June 2, 2019. She was the loving wife of 45 years to the late David L. Sameiro.

Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Charles and Frances (Willey) Sherman, she was a graduate of Fairhaven High School Class of 1952 where she met her husband. They lived in New Bedford and Marion before settling in New Bedford in 1965. She was a lifelong, active, faithful member of the Pilgrim United Church of Christ. Mrs. Sameiro served as Superintendent of the Sunday School, was a Deacon, a long time member of the Women's Club, Vacation Bible School teacher, as well as many other committee's and clubs.

As a teenager she worked at her grandparents clothing store, Willey's in downtown New Bedford, later as a buyer for Cherry and Webb. She then was the Assistant Manager at Rite-Aid Pharmacy in the South End until her retirement in 1990.

Mrs. Sameiro was a long time board member of Treatment on Demand Inc., and an active member of United Interfaith Action. In 1993 Mrs. Sameiro was the co-recipient of the Sydney Adams Award for outstanding community service, given by the Interchurch Council of Greater New Bedford. In 1995 she received a Haystack Certificate of Recognition for outstanding service in social justice from the MA Conference, United Church of Christ. She and her late husband were awarded the 8th Luiz E Martinez Award for Life by the AIDS Awareness Day Committee in 1999.

She loved music, reading, and following the Red Sox and Patriots. Most of all she enjoyed being with her family, and encouraging them in their activities; she took pleasure in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great grandsons and her nieces and nephews and their families.

She and her husband participated as a host family in the AFS (American Field Service) an exchange student program, where she was blessed to gain a loving daughter, Keiko Mamiya of Japan.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda S. Girouard and her husband Michael of New Bedford and Karen L. Sameiro of Stamford, NY; two grandchildren, Jennifer A. Magalhaes and her husband Peter of Dartmouth and David W. Kinner and his wife Karen of New Bedford; two great grandsons, Benjamin Magalhaes and Matthias Kinner; a brother in law, Leonard Sameiro of Acushnet; a sister in law, Alice Sherman of New Bedford; and a cousin, John Willey of ME. Mrs. Sameiro was the sister of the late David C. Sherman and the aunt of the late Robert Sherman.

Calling hours are Sunday from 2-5pm, in the Donaghy-Hathaway Funeral Home, 465 County St., New Bedford. Her Funeral Service will be held Monday, June 10, 2019, at 10:00AM, in the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 635 Purchase St., New Bedford. Cremation will follow and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pilgrim United Church of Christ.
