Obituary

Albert E. "Al" Comeau, 83, of East Freetown, passed away Friday, September 7, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital, in New Bedford, after a period of declining health. He was the devoted husband of 57 years to Mary E. (Hayes) Comeau.

Born and raised in Fairhaven, son of the late Joseph W. and Philomena R. (LeBlanc) Comeau, he and Mary settled in East Freetown in 1961.

Al was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, class of 1953, and immediately served eight years in the Army National Guard. He worked as a corrections officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts then as a printer for the Morse Shoe Company, in Canton, MA, for over 30 years until his retirement. A dedicated family man, Al was always available to lend a helping hand. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, and coached Little League Baseball and softball teams when his children were young. He enjoyed salt-water fishing, working on cars, and he could fix just about anything.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; children, Steven D. Comeau of East Freetown, Jacqueline M. Johansen and her husband Eric of Rochester, Joanne E. Gurney and her husband Michael of East Freetown and Jennifer A. Bigelow and her husband Scott of Denver, CO; six grandchildren, Aren and Kristoffer Johansen, Renee and Nicole Gurney and Ivy and Leah Bigelow; a sister, Laura Comeau of Acushnet and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Comeau was the brother of the late Doris Stepaniak.

Calling hours are Tuesday, from 4-7pm, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.

His funeral will be Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at 8:30am, from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 10:00am, in St. John Neumann Church, East Freetown. Cremation will follow and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Al's name to the Dana Farber Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston MA 02284.
