Capt. Franklin E. Fairhurst

FALL RIVER, MA – Capt. Franklin E. Fairhurst, 87, retired United States Navy, passed away on Friday, July 9, 2010, at his residence. Born in Assonet, MA, the son of the late William and Margaret (Wing) Fairhurst, he was the husband of Jean M. (Chrisler) Fairhurst, to whom he was married sixty-six years.

A 1940 graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Franklin also attended the former Bradford Durfee Tech for three years. He then started over forty years of service to his country with the Unites States Navy. He started by serving in WWII as a Naval Aviator. During WWII he was shot down in the Pacific. Franklin received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, and earned the rank of Captain retiring from the Navy in 1982. He also served with the U. S. Naval Reserves and retired from the Reserves in 1974.

While serving in the Navy, he also worked for the former Shell Oil Company in Fall River as a foreman for thirty-two years, retiring from Shell Oil in 1978. Franklin also earned his BS degree in business engineering, from the former SMTI in Dartmouth, MA. He was the Past Master of the Massasoit Lodge in Fall River and was a thirty-second degree mason. Capt. Fairhurst also faithfully attended the yearly air craft carrier reunions for the Hogatt Bay and the Saginaw Bay. Franklin was an avid collector of model trains and also built model trains. He enjoyed masonry work especially making or fixing stonewalls, walkways and stairs.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Sybil DeMello of Clarks Summit, PA, Paula Gerwatowski of Fairhaven, MA, Margaret Copeland of Assonet, MA, and Kathleen Fairhurst of Cambridge, MA; two sons, Franklin E. Fairhurst, Jr., of Fall River and Raymond Chrisler “Fritz” Fairhurst of Melrose, MA; a brother, Stanley Fairhurst of Assonet, MA; eight grandchildren and three great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Information

Calling hours for Capt. Fairhurst will be held Monday, July 12, 2010, from 4:00-7:00pm in the HATHAWAY HOME for FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, with a Masonic Service at 6:00 pm. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 13, at 8:45 am in the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am in Saint Bernard’s Church, 32 Main St., Assonet. Relatives and friends are invited to attend; burial will be private at the request of the family.
