FALL RIVER – Robert W. Hathaway, Jr., 86, of Fall River, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. Born in Fall River, the son of the late Robert W. Hathaway, Sr., and the late Marion (Winslow) Hathaway, he was the husband of sixty years to Mabel (Leather) Hathaway.

A graduate with the Class of 1938 of BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, after graduation, he served his country during WWII with the United States Navy. Mr. Hathaway then furthered his education by graduating from Bryant College in 1949 with a degree in finance. He then returned to active duty during the Korean conflict with the Navy. Mr. Hathaway later worked for the former Fall River Trust Company as an auditor, the Merchants National Bank in New Bedford as the comptroller, and then for the Department of Public Welfare as the chief accountant.

Mr. Hawthaway was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fall River, the Fall River Lions Club, the Fall River Lodge of Elks, and the American Legion in Fall River. He was very active at one time with PAL, IAABO, and was the co-founder of American Little League Baseball at North Park in Fall River. Mr. Hathaway was also a handyman, who enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hathaway leaves a daughter, Elizabeth A. Bochman and her husband Robert of Higganum, CT; four sons, William R. Hathaway and his wife Virginia A. Nelson of New London, CT, Robert W. Hathaway, III, and his wife Mary E. Vandewalle of Braintree, MA, Thomas W. Hathaway and his wife Cathy of Bowie, MD, and James R. Hathaway and his wife Margaret of Spotsylvania, VA; eleven grandchildren, Matthew, Marc, Kimberly, Sarah, Aaron, Ryan, Joshua, Sean, Jessica, Amanda, and Christopher.

Funeral Information

His funeral service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 11:00AM in THE HATHAWAY HOME for FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. CALLING HOURS will be held PRIOR to the service, from 9:00-11:00AM. Burial will follow with MILITARY HONORS in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River.
