View Tribute and Sign Guestbook FALL RIVER – Carol A. Garant, of Fall River, Massachusetts, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Mount Saint Francis Nursing Center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. She was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph O. “Ted” and Stella V. (Dobek) Garant.
Ms. Garant was a lifelong pioneer and innovator in the health care industry. A graduate of the Northeastern University College of Nursing, The Massachusetts General School of Nursing, The university of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Yale University and Boston College, Carol held numerous degrees in both undergraduate and graduate studies which enabled her to dedicate her life to the care and betterment of others and to the field of nursing which she so loved.
Ms. Garant held various positions in nursing research, clinical studies, staff nursing, and as a nursing instructor and teacher of psychiatry. Carol worked in coronary care, medical, surgical care, neurological and neurosurgical nursing, and psychiatry. She was instrumental in establishing the position of psychiatric–liaison nursing in her profession. Throughout the years Carol enriched her profession through research and publications. She was the author of New Pulse for Health Care, an Interpretation of Psychiatric Liaison Nursing, Models, of Nursing Practice Nursing and many others.
She was one of four original founders of Nurses United for Reimbursement Services (NURS) and worked as a lobbyist for Senator Daniel Inouye on CHAMPUS. Throughout her career Carol held positions at the Massachusetts General Hospital, the McLean Hospital, the Boston City Hospital, the New England Deaconess Hospital and the Yale–New Haven Hospital. In recent years, she served as a nursing instructor at various colleges and universities including Salve Regina in Newport, Rhode Island.
She was the recipient of the Massachusetts General Alumnae Achievement Award. She was also a member of Sigma Theta Tau, The University of Pennsylvania Alumnae Association, the Massachusetts General Alumnae Association, the Yale University Alumnae Association, University, and the Boston College Alumnae Association. As a lifelong learner, Carol enjoyed learning the Polish and German languages. Other activities which she really enjoyed were spending time at the beach, sailing, skiing, and traveling and also music.
Carol is survived by her brother, Richard P. Garant and his wife Barbara of West Wareham, Massachusetts; three nieces, Michelle Wilson, Tracy Priestner, both of Westport, MA, and Holly Garant of Somerset, MA. She is also survived by her best friends and cousins, Joyce and Vincent Carpenito of Lincoln, Rhode Island, as well as many other cousins, great-nieces and nephews. Carol will be dearly missed by her best friends and cousins, Joyce and Vincent Carpenito.
Funeral Information
Calling hours will be held Thursday, January 29, 2009, from 9:00–10:30AM in THE HATHAWAY HOME FOR FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, MA, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM in Good Shepherd Church, 1598 South Main St., Fall River. Burial will follow in the North Burial Ground, North Main St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
