Frederick J. Schobel

REHOBOTH – Frederick J. Schobel, Major USAF, retired, 80, died at his son’s residence on Monday, February 11, 2008. He was the husband of Joan (Sinnett) Schobel of Rehoboth, with whom he shared more than forty-five years of married life.

Major Schobel spent twenty years in the U. S. Air Force, retiring September 1, 1972. At the time of his retirement, he was a navigator for SAC on its KC-135 tanker planes. A thoroughly experienced pilot with more than 5608 flight hours logged in, Major Schobel was stationed at Pease AFB, in NH, Otis AFB on Cape Cod, Homestead AFB in southern FL, as well as in TX. He was the receipt of the Air Medal on March 18, 1967, for outstanding service to the U. S. Air Force. Some of his decorations and commendations include the AFLSA with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the NDSM/ GCM/ AFRESM/ SAEMR/ CRM with one oak leaf cluster, the AFOUA with one oak leaf cluster, the VSM with 2RBSS/ RVCM/ AFEM/ SOG-201 Hq 2AF/ AM with four oak leaf clusters, and the Presidential Unit Citation.

He was a graduate of Dighton High School and many USAF schools. Upon retirement from the USAF, he became the building inspector for the Town of Rehoboth. He was a twenty-five year member and former commander of the Berkley American Legion Post, 121 and was a member of the VFW Post in Barrington, RI. He enjoyed claming, quahoging, and he was a bee keeper belonging to the Bee Keepers Association.

He was the father of Mary Schobel of Centerville, MA, Joan Coutu and her husband Robert of Rehoboth, Elizabeth Fortin and her husband Ronald of Rehoboth and Frederick Schobel, II, and his companion Christine Acherknecht of Rehoboth; and was the grandfather of ten.

Funeral Information

A funeral service for Major Schoble, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend, will be held in THE CRAPO-HATHAWAY FUNERAL HOME, 350 Somerset Ave. (Route 138 South), Taunton, Saturday, February 16, 2008, at 11:00AM. Interment will take place in the Rehoboth Village Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4:00-8:00PM in the funeral home.
