View Tribute and Sign Guestbook ACUSHNET – Alfred Fernandes, 86, of Acushnet, died on Sunday, July 22, 2007, at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Arlene A. (Haskins) Fernandes. Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Manuel and the late Adelaide (Jardin) Fernandes, he lived in Acushnet all of his life. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven.
Mr. Fernandes owned and operated Rutler’s Service Station in Acushnet. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a sergeant during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign in India, Berma and China. He was a member of the VFW Freetown Post #6643 and the Club Madeirense SS Sacramento.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Fernandes leaves three sons, Alfred T. Fernandes and his wife Eileen of Acushnet, John R. Fernandes and his wife Diane of Rochester, and Kenneth W. Fernandes and his wife Marcia of Fairhaven; a daughter, Cynthia A. Marcelino and her husband John of Acushnet; two brothers, James Fernandes of San Diego, CA, and John Fernandes of Acushnet; a sister, Mary Silveira of Dartmouth; five grandchildren, Christian Fernandes of Albuquerque, NM, Jamis T. Fernandes and Genevieve A. Copley, both of Fall River, Kevin Fernandes of Fairhaven, and Quintin J. Marcelino of Acushnet; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Fernandes was the brother of the late Manuel Fernandes.
Funeral Information
His funeral will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2007, at 9:00AM from the FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment with Military Honors will follow the Mass at Acushnet Cemetery. Calling hours will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00PM.
