Walter J. Amos

View Tribute and Sign Guestbook Walter J. Amos, age 91, of Canterbury Woods, Garfield Avenue, Attleboro, died Friday Oct. 14, at home. He was the husband of Beatrice L. (Maddren) Amos, to whom he had been married for 64 years.
He was a life-long resident of Attleboro and was educated in the Attleboro school system. He graduated from Attleboro High School with the class of 1931, where he played the trumpet with the orchestra and band.
He was one of the original members of the Attleboro Boys Club band, a civic project sponsored in part by the late Joseph Finberg, a local Attleboro industrialist and conducted by the late John Liang Gibb, the music director of the Attleboro School Department.
He was born in Attleboro on Nov. 17, 1913, a son of the late William W. and Esther L. (Barney) Amos.
He received his nursing degree from the Butler Hospital School of Nursing in Providence, which included a 14month affiliation at Boston City Hospital.
He had spent most of his working life as a professional pharmaceutical sales representative covering most of the New England states.
He was a former member of the American Board of Urological Health Professionals and was a certified Urological Registered Nurse.
Before his retirement in 1978, he worked at the Brockton VA Hospital, where he assisted in setting up the spinal cord injury ward.
Mr. Amos was active in and attended the Memorial Baptist Church of Seekonk.
He had served in the Navy for five years during World War II, retiring with the rank of chief pharmacist's mate. He spent two years in Tulagi in the Solomon Islands, where his unit established an advanced base hospital.
He was a life member of the Gilbert Perry VFW Post No. 115 in Attleboro.
Walter loved horses and rode twice weekly for 11 years. He was a devotee of classical music and attended many concerts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Symphony Hall in Boston and at Tanglewood, the summer home of the orchestra in the Berkshires. Following his retirement in 1978, he volunteered as an usher at Tanglewood for nine years.
Besides his wife, he leaves one brother, Robert W. Amos of Ocala, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Information
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the R.I. Veterans Cemetery in Exeter, R.I. Calling hours and flowers are omitted.
